The Metropolitan Opera Announces Live in HD Encores for Summer 2023
Audiences will be able to view recordings of four previous Met productions in their local cinemas
The Metropolitan Opera will re-broadcast four of its most popular live cinema presentations at various locations in the summer of 2023, to allow more people to experience each of the productions.
The summer encores will kick off on July 26 with Philip Glass's Akhnaten. This 2019 production features countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as the revolutionary pharaoh who attempted to radically alter his empire, with Karen Kamensek conducting.
This is followed on August 2 with Verdi's Il Trovatore, with soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and tenor Marcelo Álvarez as the passionate lovers Leonora and Manrico. This 2011 production is conducted by Marco Armiliato.
Another nineteenth-century Italian opera, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, will be broadcast on August 9. This 2014 production stars mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, and baritone Christopher Maltman, alongside conductor Michele Mariotti.
The season comes to a close on August 16 with Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, in a 2007 production featuring Renée Fleming and Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, conducted by Valery Gergiev.
