The Met will Live-Stream Terence Blanchard's Opera "Champion" in Cinemas Around the World
The opera follows the tragic life of Emile Griffith, a closeted champion boxer
A new production of composer Terence Blanchard's 2013 opera Champion recently premiered at The Metropolitan Opera. On April 29 at 12:55pm ET, the opera will also be streamed live in a number of cinemas, so that those outside of New York can experience the production.
Featuring a libretto by Michael Cristofer, Champion follows the story of the closeted champion boxer Emile Griffith, who tragically killed his rival Benny Paret in the ring after Paret taunted him with homophobic comments. Bass-baritones Ryan Speedo Green and Eric Owens portray the younger and older versions of Griffith as he comes to terms with the struggles of his life.
The production is conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and directed by James Robinson, while Gary Halvorson will direct the recording that plays in cinemas.
