Germany's Bielefeld Philharmonic Names New General Music Director
English conductor Robin Davis will step into the role
English conductor Robin Davis has been named as the new General Music Director at Germany's Bielefelder Philharmoniker. He was chosen from a field of three finalists, which also included Daniel Huppert and Michael Wendeburg.
As part of the final selection round, Davis led the orchestra in a performance of Brahms' First Symphony, Mozart's First and Third Horn Concertos, and a piece of his choice — the Fairytale Poem by the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina.
Born in Exeter, England, Davis studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, before moving to London where he studied piano with Michael Dussek at the Royal Academy of Music. While a student, he received a number of accolades, including the Kathleen Ferrier Accompaniment Prize.
In 2009, Davis became a répétiteur at Theater Dortmund, and during this time he also appeared as a soloist with the Dortmund Philharmonic. He then studied conducting with Ekhart Wycik and in 2011 moved to the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater as Kapellmeister and assistant to the General Music Director.
Following stints as the first conductor at Theater Lüneburg and Salzburger Landestheater, Davis was appointed general music director at the Pforzheim Theater in 2020.
