Today is Russian violist Yuri Bashmet's 64th birthday.

He is widely regarded as one of the world's preeminent violists – performing regularly with the world's finest orchestras and conductors.

He is the founder of the Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra, and has been the dedicatee of over 50 new viola works - including concertos by Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke.
