Toronto Symphony Appoints New Resident Conductor

Nicholas Sharma will step into the role at the opening of the 2025/26 season

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has announced that Nicholas Sharma has been appointed as its new Resident Conductor, as well as Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Sharma succeeds Trevor Wilson and emerged as the successful candidate following a nationwide search process.

As part of the role, he will conduct some of the TSO's mainstage concerts, as well as receive mentoring and attend TSO rehearsals. Further, he will conduct three TYSO concerts per season.

Sharma has made recent debuts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Eugene Symphony, and was Assistant Conductor of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra during the 2024/25 season.

Originally a violinist, he studied conducting with David Jacobs at the University of Oregon, and then with Neal Varon at the Eastman School of Music, where he ultimately received a DMA. He has appeared at a number of prominent summer festivals and participated in masterclasses with conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Stéphane Denève, Neeme Järvi, Robert Spano, Nicholas McGegan, Mark Stringer, and Boris Brott.

"Nicholas brings a beautiful naturalness to his conducting — musical, confident, and calm," said Gustavo Gimeno, TSO Music Director. "He has an ease and clarity on the podium that immediately resonates with musicians, along with a thoughtful and engaging presence. I’m delighted to welcome him to the TSO and look forward to collaborating in the seasons ahead."

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and to have the opportunity to work with Maestro Gustavo Gimeno, the incredible TSO musicians, and the talented young artists of the TSYO," Sharma said. "As a Toronto native, it’s especially meaningful to return to my home city and contribute to its vibrant musical life. The warmth and connection I felt during my audition process left a lasting impression, and I’m honored to now join this musical family."
