NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Names New Conductor Fellow
Ukrainian Conductor Sasha Yankevych will work alongside the orchestra's Chief Conductor, Alan Gilbert
Ukrainian conductor Sasha Yankevych will take on the role of Conductor Fellow of Hamburg's NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, where he will observe and work alongside the orchestra's Chief Conductor, Alan Gilbert.
Previous Conductor Fellows in Hamburg include Simon Crawford-Philips and Petr Popelka.
As part of his new role, Yankevych will also have the opportunity to lead projects with the NDR Youth Symphony Orchestra, and perform as part of the NDR Discover Music! program.
Born in Ukraine in 1991, Yankevych originally studied the piano, and furthered his studies in Poland at the Music Academy of Bydgoszcz. He then joined the Opera Studio of the Warsaw State Opera and Opera Studio of the Zürich Opera House, before working as assistant conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.
He is a laureate at several international competitions, including second prize and the orchestra prize at the Arturo Toscanini Competition in Parma. He also won awards at the Richter International Piano Competition and HSBC Académie d’Aix-en-Provence in 2018.
Yankevych recently served as the Assistant Conductor at the Verbier Festival, where he worked alongside Gianandrea Noseda, Klaus Mäkelä, and Reinhard Goebel.
He is presently studying for a master's degree at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
