University of Maryland, Baltimore County Hires Diversity Program Fellow
Argentinian cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado will begin the two-year fellowship in the Fall of 2023
Awarded to recent Ph.D. graduates of any field represented at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), the Faculty Fellow for Diversity in the Arts position supports promising scholars, artists, and creative practitioners committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and prepares them for potential tenure track appointments at UMBC.
Cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado will serve in the in-residence fellowship from 2023 to 2025.
The fellowship will provide Delgado a stipend of $54,500; health benefits; $5,500 for conference travel, preparation of scholarly/creative work, and technology needs; an office space; access to on-campus facilities; and other university resources.
Additionally, he will collaborate with teaching and research mentors, receive specialized professional development opportunities, plus teach one course a year in the music department.
Studying with Matt Haimovitz at McGill University, Delgado completed his doctorate in performance, focusing on contemporary music and Nuevo tango.
He was the featured cellist in the “Virtuoso Brain” episode of the Decouverte TV program, and performances from his research have been featured with CBC Radio Ideas.
He has conducted projects in 27 different countries, including three cello concertos written for him — Pájaro contra el borde de la noche by Luis Naon and commissioned by Radio France, Jorge Bosso’s 2016 Cinco Tangos Apócrifos, and Jason Noble’s 2022 The Night of a Capricious Dawn.
The founding member of the Stick&Bow duo with percussionist Krystina Marcoux, he has performed on international tours and released three albums in three consecutive years from 2019 as an artist of the Analekta/Outhere label.
Inaugurated in 1966, UMBC is a public research university that combines pedagogy, research, and service to benefit the citizens of Maryland. The institution now comprises 14,000 students in over 30 academic departments.
