We are coming to you live from the Ravinia Festival, North America's oldest music festival, which is known for presenting a large variety of different events throughout the summer. These concerts feature performances from acclaimed musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and John Legend as well as the annual summer residency of the nation's finest orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to several afternoon and evening concerts presented during the summer, the musicians participate in a series of public master classes, where the faculty or a Ravinia guest artist provide in-the-moment insights on the fellows’ performances of excerpts from their repertoire, guiding both the growth of their interpretations and sharing the experience with all in attendance.
This master class is led by Robert Levin, who is a noted theorist and Mozart scholar in addition to an active concert pianist with numerous credits across the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Levin is renowned for his Mozart and Beethoven performances with improvised embellishments and cadenzas, a restoration of Classical-period practice, as well as for his published completions of Mozart fragments, including the Requiem (premiered in 1991 by Helmuth Rilling) and C-minor Mass (commissioned by Carnegie Hall and premiered in 2005). He recently completed recording Mozart’s works for keyboard and orchestra, and BBC Magazine named his 2022 collection of Mozart’s piano sonatas its recording of the month.
