Vienna Radio Symphony Extends Conductor Marin Alsop’s Contract
The 2021/22 season marks Alsop’s third year as Chief Conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, which she leads at Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein.
In light of Alsop's contract extension, the ensemble aims to focus on works by female composers and strengthen relationships with concert halls in the Austrian federal states.
Describing it as "continuing the very successful artistic path of the RSO," ORF radio director Ingrid Thurnher was extremely pleased with the news.
Alsop's next concert with the orchestra will be this month, as part of a tour of Spain with cellist Kian Soltani. Audiences will hear works by Hannah Eisendle, Schumann, and Dvořák.
With an impressive career under her belt, Alsop is the Chief Conductor and Curator of Chicago’s Ravinia Festival and Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and São Paulo Symphony Orchestra.
She also serves as the Associate Artist at London's Southbank Centre in addition to Music Director of National Orchestral Institute + Festival.
The first and only conductor to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, Alsop made history as the first female conductor of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms
In the press release given by Alsop's management Intermusica, the conductor commented: "I am thrilled to extend my tenure with the wonderful Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the ORF. Our concerts, recordings, tours and projects together are a source of great joy and pride for me. Working closely with these outstanding musicians; under the umbrella of a forward thinking institution; based in a city steeped in culture, ticks every box for me, and I look forward to our future work together.''
A representative of the ORF shared that the extension, "creates the conditions for a continuation of the highly successful collaboration," which "includes not only diverse and exciting concerts with numerous premieres and outstanding CD productions, but also tours and guest appearances."
