Premiering in 1819, Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 was intended to be heard in E-flat major using scordatura tuning for the soloist, tuning all strings up a half-step with the music written in D Major in order to have the soloist shine in timbre and projection over the orchestra.
Carmen Fantasy was written later that century, in 1881, with Sarasate premiering the piece himself. The piece was based on Bizet's opera, Carmen, which particularly focused on the adaptation of the music with a Spanish character.
Perlman's 1972 recording with Warner Classics launched his catalog with the label, and the re-release of the iconic album continues to highlight the virtuosity that defines Perlman as one of the greatest violinists of our time.
