Russian-American violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold died on this day in 1995, aged 85.

A student of Eugene Ysaye, he is remembered as one of the most influential violin teachers of the 20th Century.

Mr. Gingold served as Concertmaster with the Detroit and Cleveland Symphony Orchestras and held distinguished teaching positions at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Paris Conservatoire, and the Meadowmount School of Music.

Under his artistic guidance, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis was founded under Gingold. In 1994, he later passed the baton to his student, friend, and colleague, Jaime Laredo.

Gingold was the recipient of the American String Teachers Association Teacher of the Year, the Fredrick Bachman Lieber Award for Distinguished Teaching at Indiana University, the Chamber Music America National Service Award, and the American Symphony Orchestra League's Golden Baton Award.

He gave the world premiere performance of Ysaye’s 3rd Sonata for Solo Violin.
