Violinist Gyula Stuller Steps Down from Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne
The Hungarian violinist has been the orchestra's concertmaster since 1990, based in Lausanne, Switzerland
Hungarian violinist Gyula Stuller has stood down from his position as concertmaster of Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (OCL). Founded in 1942, the orchestra is now directed by French violinist Renaud Capuçon. Stuller has played with the group for more than three decades, having joined the orchestra in 1990.
Born in Budapest, Stuller studied initially at the Franz Liszt Music Academy with Ferenc Halász and Ilona Hencz. In 1979 he won the Joseph Szigeti International Violin Competition and became a soloist with the Hungarian agency Filharmonia. This appointment provided him with solo opportunities all over Europe.
Later, a scholarship took him to London, where he spent two years studying with Gyorgy Pauk at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Stuller's departure from the OCL will allow him to give more of his time and attention to another role he presently holds: that of Head of the String Faculty at Lausanne's "Haute École de Musique," a specialist performing arts high school. His students there have won a number of prizes in international competitions and frequently go on to distinguished careers.
"We thank [Stuller] for all these beautiful years and wish him a good continuation, in particular in the continuation of the teaching of the violin at the Haute École de Musique," wrote the OCL on social media.
