Russian-born American violinist and conductor Isaac Stern was born on this day in 1920.

Dying in 2001, he is remembered as one of the finest violinists of the 20th Century, and for his dedication towards championing new talent – credited with discovering Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.
