Violinist Julia Fischer to Perform at 2023 Nobel Prize Concert

The German violinist will perform with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen at the event in December 2023

Annually featuring internationally-renowned musicians and conductors, the Nobel Prize Concert has been held since 2005 at the Konserthuset Stockholm to honor the year’s Nobel Prize laureates.

On December 8, 2023, violinist Julia Fischer will perform Brahms’ Violin Concerto with conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO).

Attended by members of the Swedish Royal family and Nobel Prize laureates and guests, this year’s ceremony and concert marks Fischer’s debut with the RSPO.

Other works on the concert program include Boccherini’s music, arranged for orchestra by Luciano Berio; Ravel’s ballet music for Daphnis and Chloé, in Suite No. 2; and American composer Gabriella Smith’s Tumblebird Contrails — inspired by sounds of the Pacific Ocean.

Presented by Nobel Prize Outreach and Konserthuset Stockholm, the concert event is part of a larger weekly program for the year’s Nobel Prize laureates. Tickets for the 2023 Nobel Prize Concert will be available from October 18, 2023.

Born in Munich, Fischer is also a concert pianist, chamber musician, and violin teacher. She received her first violin lessons at the age of three and was taught piano by her mother.

From the age of nine, she studied with Ana Chumachenco, and later became her successor at the University of Munich. Fischer’s career skyrocketed following her first-prize win at the 1995 International Yehudi Menuhin Competition.

Currently serving as artist in residence of the Staatskapelle Dresden, Fischer has worked with conductors including Christian Thielemann, Riccardo Muti, Juanjo Mena, Markus Poschner, Andrey Boreyko, and Antonio Pappano, among others.

She has performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Orchestre National de France, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Warsaw Philharmonic, and more.

In 2010 she founded the Julia Fischer Quartet with Alexander Sitkovetsky, Nils Mönkemeyer, and Benjamin Nyffenegger. Additionally, she has collaborated with cellist Daniel Müller-Schott for over 20 years, and released award-winning albums with the Pentatone and Decca record labels.

Her accolades include the Federal Cross of Merit, Gramophone Award, and German Culture Prize. She plays a 1742 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, and a 2018 violin made by Philipp Augustin.
