Violist Lawrence Power Launches New Viola Commissioning Project
In the first of the new 'Rooftops' viola commissioning project, violist Lawrence Power presents 'Power' for solo viola by Huw Watkins
British violist Lawrence Power has this week announced the launch of his new viola 'Rooftops' commissioning project - whereby he will perform ten newly-commissioned short works for solo viola on the rooftops of iconic London music venues.
The series will include new new pieces by composers Huw Watkins, Cassandra Miller, Garth Knox, William Marsey and Erkki-Sven Tüür - recorded atop venues including St John's Smith Square, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings.
"The big question facing every artist at the moment – which is challenging but exciting – is how can we be creative? ..." Lawrence has this week told The Violin Channel.
"I find myself drawn to commissioning new music and that is the idea behind this project – commissioning ten short solo viola works and presenting them beautifully on film in various iconic London venues that are locked down ..." he has said.
"It seems a natural direction to create something new out of this particular time - it’s a time to be free and creative, and to try new things."
In the first of the new 'Rooftops' series, Lawrence presents 'Power' by British composer Huw Watkins.
