Young Concert Artists Expands Career Catalyst Program

YCA will be offering seven online courses over the next few months to help empower the self-managed musician

With a legacy that spans over six decades, Young Concert Artists has been dedicated to cultivating artist leaders who will shape the future of classical music.

To further its commitment to the growth and development of its artists, YCA has announced the new expansion of the YCA Career Catalyst program with seven online courses offered in the coming months. In addition to the courses, an online platform also provides industry insights and resources with blogs and video series.

"The digital age demands that musicians be versatile, embodying roles as entrepreneurs, storytellers, and advocates for their art," YCA told The Violin Channel. "Recognizing this shift, the YCA Career Catalyst is designed to furnish emerging artists with the essential tools and knowledge to forge self-reliant and self-managed careers in music.

"It aims to transform the traditional career trajectory of musicians by emphasizing the importance of multifaceted skills beyond performance excellence. The initiative underscores the necessity for artists to be adept in storytelling, entrepreneurship, innovation, and to act as ambassadors for the arts within their communities."

The heart of the YCA Career Catalyst lies in its diverse range of courses, each curated to address the multifaceted demands of a successful music career. These courses are tailored to empower artists in the crucial areas of project creation, financial management, branding and marketing, tax navigation, performance optimization, and philanthropic engagement:

  1. Make Your Own Work: Spearheaded by David Srebnik of All Art is Personal, this course is a deep dive into project creation, providing participants with the tools to bring their passion projects to life and secure income on their terms.

  2. Money & Musicians: Tiffany Soricelli leads a comprehensive course on personal finance for artists, covering business fundamentals, life hacks, and legal knowledge essential for financial stability in the arts.

  3. Branding, Marketing, and PR: This course, guided by experts Andrew Ousley and Fay Leshner, empowers musicians to master the art of self-promotion, leveraging digital platforms to craft a compelling online persona and narrative.

  4. Artist Taxes 101: Dr. Jeffrey Nytch demystifies the complex world of taxes for freelance musicians, providing clarity and confidence in managing tax obligations.

  5. Artist Taxes 101: Crash Course!: A condensed session for those seeking a quick yet thorough overview of artist taxes, offering practical advice for a smoother tax-filing process.

  6. Optimize Your Performance: Led by Dana Fonteneau, this workshop redefines success, encouraging a holistic approach to performance that encompasses psychological well-being, nutrition, and more.

  7. Working With Donors: Daniel Kellogg, President of YCA, shares insights into the art of engaging with donors, a crucial skill for artists seeking support for their creative projects.

Each course will be conducted live through Zoom, allowing for real-time engagement. To foster interactivity and meaningful dialogue, enrollment in each course will be capped.

Recognizing the financial challenges that often accompany the early stages of a musical career, the courses are offered at an affordable rate to ensure broad accessibility. For individuals who find the fee to be a barrier, provisions are in place to waive the cost upon request.

"The YCA Career Catalyst is more than a series of educational offerings; it is a paradigm shift in how musicians approach their careers," YCA continues. "By addressing pivotal questions about the skills needed for a fulfilling career, how to thrive as a 'company of one,' and the tools that best support a musician's journey, YCA is setting a new standard for what it means to be a musician in the modern era.

"As we look to the future, the YCA Career Catalyst is poised to become a cornerstone for artists seeking to navigate the complexities of the music industry with autonomy and innovation," the organization added. "This initiative not only continues YCA's legacy of excellence but also redefines it, ensuring that the next generation of musicians is equipped to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the evolving musical landscape."
