Yuja Wang Named the New York Philharmonic's Artist-in-Residence
During the 2024/25 season, Wang will lead the orchestra from the piano and will also perform both Ravel piano concerti in a single concert
Pianist Yuja Wang will serve as the New York Philharmonic's Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence for the 2024/25 season. As such, she will appear prominently in two of the orchestra's mainstage programs for the season.
Between January 23 and 25, 2025, Wang will lead the New York Philharmonic from the piano in a program that includes Janáček’s Capriccio for Piano Left Hand and Winds, Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, and the original jazz-band version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Then, from March 13 to 16, 2025, she will perform both Ravel piano concerti in a single concert: the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and the Piano Concerto in G major. Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, these performances are part of the NY Phil’s 2024/25 season celebration of the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth.
Born into a musical family in Beijing, Wang studied with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music. She came to prominence in 2007, after she stepped in for Martha Argerich as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Just two years later, she had signed an exclusive contract with the Deutsche Grammophon label.
Wang has given concerto appearances alongside conductors including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner, Zubin Mehta, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Antonio Pappano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Yuri Temirkanov, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Pinchas Zukerman.
