31-year-old Valentin Șerban from Romania was awarded 1st prize at the George Enescu International Violin Competition in Bucharest, Romania.
A student of jury member Silvia Marcovici at the Music University in Graz, he is a former top prize winner at the Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition.
2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 21-year-old Jaewon Wee from South Korea and 19-year-old Tassilo Probst from Germany.
The opening two rounds of the competition were hosted online in 2020, due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the final rounds are being held this week in person from the Romanian Athenaeum with conductor Wilson Hermanto and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra.
The 2021 violin jury comprised Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Remus Azoiţei, Koichiro Harada, Silvia Marcovici, Mihaela Martin, Igor Petrushevski, Eduard Schmieder and Krzysztof Wegrzyn.
15-year-old Jaemin Han, from South Korea, was awarded 1st prize in this year's cello division.
