The 3 Junior Finalists have been announced at the 2019 22nd Annual Sphinx Competition
The 3 Juniors Finalists have just minutes ago been announced at the 2019 22nd Annual Sphinx Competition – in Detroit, United States,
Open to American Black and Latino junior high and high school students, the annual competition is aimed at the encouragement, development and recognition of classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities.
2019 Junior Finalists are:
- 16-year-old violinist Sophia Ayer
- 16-year-old cellist Maxwell Remmer
- 17-year-old cellist Nygel Witherspoon
The 2019 Junior 1st prize winner will receive US $10,000 plus a number of performance opportunities - including a nationally-broadcast radio appearance on From the Top.
This year’s jury comprises: Jenny Bilfield, Kelly Hall-Tompkins, Patrice Jackson, Ani Kavafian, Jeffrey Ziegler, Edison Ruiz and Steven Tenenbom.
An honourable mention, following the Semi-Final stage of the competition, was awarded to 16-year-old violinist Sofia Matthews.
The Final Round will be held on Friday the 1st of February at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall.
