22-year-old Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng has been awarded 1st prize at the 2020 Bader and Overton Canadian Cello Competition - in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
A current student of Jens Peter Maintz at the Universität der Künste Berlin, Bryan is a former laureate at the Paulo International Cello Competition - and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Competition.
He will receive CAD $20,000 - plus a number of performance opportunities.
Joint 2nd prize was awarded to cellists Leland Ko and Andreas Schmalhofer.
“The level of playing was absolutely extraordinary, and we congratulate all the award-winning cellists and for their courage and litheness in participating in the newly configured online competition with beauty and grace,” Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts Director Tricia Baldwin has said.
Open to Canadian-based cellists aged 18 and 29 who do not currently hold orchestral positions, the 2020 jury comprised: Roman Borys, Minna Rose Chung, Denise Djokic, Joseph Elworthy, Matt Haimovitz, David Hetherington, Christina Mahler, Paul Marleyn, Evan Mitchell, Shauna Rolston and Wolf Tormann.
