French-American conductor Pierre Monteux died on this day in 1964 – 53 years ago.

He served principal conducting positions with The Metropolitan Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, San Francisco Symphony and the London Symphony Orchestra – and is remembered in history for having conducted the premiere performance of Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ and ‘Petrushka’, Ravel’s ‘Daphnis et Chloe’ and Debussy’s ‘Jeux’.
