NEW TO YOUTUBE | VC Artist Attacca Quartet Performs Philip Glass’ String Quartet No. 3 "Mishima"

The GRAMMY-award winning quartet plays the third movement of the piece, titled “1934 - Grandmother and Kimitake”

VC Artist Attacca Quartet comprises violinists Amy Schroeder and Domenic Salerni, violist Nathan Schram, and cellist Andrew Yee

Written in 1985, Philip Glass’ String Quartet No.3 “Mishima” is featured on Attacca Quartet’s recent album, “Of All Joys,” released on Sony Classical. The album also includes works by Arvo Pärt and several Renaissance composers.

The repertoire on the album is centered around the “Mishima” string quartet. All six movements represent excerpts from Glass’ score for Paul Schrader’s 1985 film “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.” The biopic is based on Yukio Mishima, considered one of Japan’s most influential 20th-century writers.

“[Attacca quartet] was drawn to how Glass created musical movements that resonated within the thematic structure of the film, yet that also reached outside and into the kind of deep soul-searching that ‘Of All Joys’ asks of its listeners,” Sony Classical wrote on their website.

The album reflects Attacca Quartet’s “joy of music and creativity with the excitement of being physically together again, while featuring [an] original take on great works from both the Minimalist movement and the Renaissance era.”

Based in New York, the Attacca Quartet was formed in 2003 and has so far performed on six acclaimed albums, including “Caroline Shaw: Orange,” which won a GRAMMY Award in 2020.

The quartet has served as The Juilliard School’s Graduate Resident String Quartet and Quartet-in-Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

They have collaborated with artists such as Björk and James Blake, featured in the music of a popular video game “Red Dead Redemption 2,” and performed in the soundtrack of Amazon’s 2016 film “Mozart in the Jungle.”
