Acclaimed African American composer George Theophilus Walker has passed away - aged 96
Acclaimed African American composer George Theophilus Walker has passed away - aged 96.
A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, the Curtis Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with David Moyer, Arthur Poister, Rudolf Serkin, William Primrose, Gregor Piatigorsky, Rosario Scalero and Samuel Barber, Doctor Walker was awarded a coveted Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996 for his work, Lilacs - making him the first African American person in history to receive the honour.
Throughout his 5 decade academic career, he held faculty positions at Smith College, the University of Colorado Boulder, Rutgers University, the Peabody Institute and the University of Delaware.
