Acclaimed African American composer George Theophilus Walker has passed away - aged 96.

A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, the Curtis Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with David Moyer, Arthur Poister, Rudolf Serkin, William Primrose, Gregor Piatigorsky, Rosario Scalero and Samuel Barber, Doctor Walker was awarded a coveted Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996 for his work, Lilacs - making him the first African American person in history to receive the honour.

Our condolences are with Doctor Walker's family, friends, colleagues and students.
