American Luthier William Monical has Died, Age 78

A highly regarded instrument maker and restorer, the luthier passed away recently from an undisclosed cause

Monical was the owner of the William Monical and Son Violins on Staten Island, NY since 1978.

He had extensive knowledge of the technology and history of stringed instruments including violins, cellos, and viola de gambas. He specialized and was known for his work on Baroque instruments.

He worked with some of the great experts including René Morel at Jacques Francais’ shop and Dietrich Kessler, the renowned viol-maker and expert in the UK at Withers’ shop.

He also served as the President of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers.

"We were most saddened to learn of the passing of William L. Monical, a founding member of our organization," said the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers on its Facebook. "He was an important and influential figure in our world and will be sorely missed."

Our condolences are with Mr. Monical's family, friends, and colleagues.
