Applications Closing to The Colburn Conservatory of Music

Applications for the school’s undergraduate and graduate courses are due on December 3, 2024

Based in Los Angeles, the Colburn Conservatory of Music is now accepting applications from prospective students for its Bachelor of Music, Performance Diploma, Master of Music in Performance, Professional Studies Certificate, and Artist Diploma programs.

Conservatory students are chosen based on the current instrumentation of the Colburn Orchestra and piano department.

The current openings at the school for Fall 2025 enrolment include Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Double Bass, Flute, Harp, Horn, Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Tenor, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin (Beaver studio), Violin (Lipsett studio), and Violin (Batjer studio).

The school also has an opening for its Chamber Ensemble-in-Residence program — which is for pre-formed groups with significant experience and recognition as an ensemble. The two-year program will see individual ensemble members enroll in either the AD or MM program with a Chamber Music Emphasis. The ensemble should be three or more players; duos should send a letter of inquiry before applying.

The Chamber Ensemble will receive primarily group-applied lessons, with occasional individual lessons in support of ensemble playing. In addition, there will be weekly chamber coachings with Conservatory faculty and guest artists. The ensemble will perform a minimum of one recital per semester at the school.

Interested ensembles should contact Admissions for pre-screening repertoire requirements and additional application details. Only one group will be accepted to the residency program per year and successful candidates will receive full tuition scholarships and grants that cover housing and meals.

Colburn School’s string faculty includes violinists Martin Beaver, Robert Lipsett, and Margaret Batjer, violist Tatjana Masurenko, cellist Clive Greensmith, and double bassist Peter Lloyd. Other faculty members include pianist Fabio Bidini and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Alumni of the school include violinists Simone Porter, Blake Pouliot, Nigel Armstrong, and William Hagen, and ensembles including the Calder Quartet, and VC Artists Calidore String Quartet and Viano String Quartet.
