Atlanta Symphony Presents Day of the Dead Concert and Festival

The program will celebrate Mexican culture through music, drama, and dance

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is hosting a family concert in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Scheduled for October 29, 2023, at 1:30pm and 3:00 PM, the concert will celebrate Mexican heritage through a program of favorites such as Huapango and Besame mucho.

In addition, the orchestra will host a Día de los Muertos Festival, to be held in the lobby of the Woodruff Arts Center and outside on Callaway Plaza. The festival will run from 1pm to 5pm, and will include mariachi performances, Ballet Folklórico, stilt walkers, face painting, altar exhibition, traditional Mexican games, and representation from various Latin American community organizations. There will also be themed food trucks with traditional food and drinks available.

The concert will feature a dramatic narrative, created by Atlanta playwright Jessica Rosa Espinoza. This will feature letters to departed loved ones, celebrating family and life after death in accordance with the significance of the day. The music and drama will be enhanced by the presence of traditional dancers from Alma Mexicana.

"We are passionate about inviting our community to celebrate the vibrant culture of Atlanta through music," said Jennifer Barlament, the Executive Director of the ASO. "Our inaugural Dia de los Muertos Festival last year was so much fun and attracted so many people that we knew our season would not be complete without an even bigger and better festival, this time in coordination with our popular Family Concert Series. It’s a perfect way for families to explore Mexican culture through music, dance, dress, and delicious food."
