Boston’s Silkroad Ensemble Announces Tour
The Silkroad Ensemble presents “Phoenix Rising” with their artistic director and GRAMMY-Award winning musician and vocalist Rhiannon Giddens, in a multi-city tour on the East coast of the U.S. from July 16–30, 2022.
Succeeding Yo-Yo Ma in the role, Giddens was appointed the ensemble’s artistic director in July 2020 and this season marks Silkroad Ensemble’s debut tour with her at the helm.
“Phoenix Rising” is a combination of past and new works — Silkroad members and Giddens will premiere works encapsulating their collective experience during the pandemic.
These pieces include three new commissions by Silkroad artists Sandeep Das, Maeve Gilchrist, and Kaoru Watanabe. The program also involves new arrangements by Giddens, Colin Jacobsen, Edward Pérez, and Mazz Swift.
The ensemble will perform in New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Virginia, and Massachusetts. For more information and to attend the concerts, click here.
Silk Road Ensemble was founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 1998. The group name was inspired by and recognizes the historical Silk Road — an ancient trade route linking the West with the Middle East and Asia — as a model for cultural collaboration.
Over the years, Yo-Yo Ma has brought together artists from regions once linked by the Silk Road and created a touring ensemble of top musicians from around the world; educational programs; and a social enterprise — bridging various cultures through the arts.
