ON THIS DAY | Brahms’ Double Concerto Premiered in 1887

Brahms composed one last orchestral work after his Symphony No. 4 in 1885, uniting the violin and cello for the first time in his compositional history

Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto in A Minor Op. 102 for violin, cello, and orchestra premiered on this day in 1887.

The first performance was given by cellist Robert Hausmann and violinist Joseph Joachim.

The concerto was, in part, a gesture of reconciliation from Brahms to Joachim, following a personal and professional fall out.
