British violinist Hugh Bean died on this day in 2003 – aged 74.

A student of Albert Sammons and André Gertler, Maestro Bean served as Concertmaster of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra - and held a distinguished teaching position at London's Royal College of Music for almost four decades.
