American cellist Michael Grebanier has passed away - aged 82

American cellist Michael Grebanier has passed away - aged 82.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Leonard Rose, Mr Grebanier was a former 1st prize winner at the Walter Naumburg International Cello Competition and had served as Principal Cellist with the San Francisco Symphony since 1977.

“Michael’s playing was a model of elegance, beauty, and musicality ... colleague, friend, leader, ardent union supporter — he will be missed,” San Francisco Symphony cellist Barbara Bogatin has this week said via social media.
