Classical Circuit Podcast Episode 2 — Trumpet Soloist Matilda Lloyd

Host Ella Lee interviews the award-winning trumpeter on her perceptions of success and the strong community of female brass players

Launched this year, Ella Lee’s classical music podcast, “Classical Circuit” explores the intricacies of the classical music industry, and all that comes with working in it. Hailing from across the profession, guests on the podcast discuss their careers and personal opinions.

“Classical Circuit” is now available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. We had a chance to talk to Ella about her inspiration behind creating this podcast in this exclusive interview.

The second episode features trumpet soloist, educator, and podcaster, Matilda Lloyd. She discusses her perception of the word “success,” having a strong community of female brass players, why identity can get a bit messy for musicians, and unwelcome marriage proposals in her DMs…

A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Royal Academy of Music, Lloyd also attended the Malmö Academy of Music studying with Håkan Hardenberger.

In 2014, she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final and made her BBC Proms solo debut two years later with Alpesh Chauhan and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. A Yamaha Artist, her accolades also include first prize at the 2017 Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition.

In 2023, her debut album “Casta Diva” on Chandos Records was released to great acclaim, with BBC Music Magazine naming it their recording of the month that June.

She regularly gives masterclasses both in the UK and abroad, and is also a London Mozart Players Education Ambassador and an ambassador for the charity Brass for Africa. Nominated by the Barbican Centre London and Konserthuset Stockholm, Lloyd will be performing in prestigious venues across Europe as the 2024/25 European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) Rising Star.
