Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti performing the world premiere recording of composer and jazz legend Wynton Marsalis' newly-premiered Violin Concerto in D - with conductor Cristian Măcelaru and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
"We wanted this concerto to be a dialogue between two different kinds of music ... and as such it has African rhythms, burlesque passages, Celtic and gospel music ...” Wynton has this month told The Violin Channel.
"I love jazz music and I love the orchestra ... I don’t separate music into different styles, there’s not one body of music that is greater than another ... so I thought the two could come together ...” he has said.
”I hope the recording speaks to those with a curiosity in crossing cultures, and in complex, colourful and uplifting music … this music affirms a belief I’ve held since childhood – that when we strip away our concepts of race, religion or culture, our DNA shows more similarity than difference,” Nicola has told The Violin Channel.
