The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music has announced the appointment of Romanian conductor, Cristian Macelaru as their new Music Director and Conductor.
The appointment comes following a year long search - after it was announced that Marin Alsop would step down after 25 years in the role.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have found Cristian Macelaru .... his curiosity and genuine passion for new music, coupled with his skill and dynamism on the podium, make him a perfect fit for the Festival ...” Executive Director, Ellen Primack has said.
“I am excited and humbled by the prospect of joining this beautiful artistic family ... Cabrillo’s vision is unique—it has contributed immensely to the creation and performance of great art,” the 36-year-old has said.
Cristian currently serves as Conductor-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra - and has recently led subscription concerts with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
He will conduct his inaugural season in August 2017.
