Switzerland's Musical Institutions Issue a Joint Statement on Ukraine
Three prominent Swiss music organizations have released a joint statement that details their stance on the war in Ukraine. The statement is signed by Martin T:son Engstroem (Verbier Festival), Michael Haefliger (Lucerne Festival), and Steve Roger (Orchestre de la Suisse Romande).
"As three of Switzerland’s leading music institutions, we strongly condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine," the statement reads. "As these disturbing events have unfolded, we have taken firm and impactful measures, including the cancellation of all artists aligned with or supporting the Russian regime’s actions."
However, the three authors made an emphatic distinction between Russian artists who have shown public support for Putin and Russian artists who do not support the war.
"Collectively, we confirm our continued support of Russian artists," the statement continues. "Those who have not aligned themselves with the actions of the Russian government do not deserve to be excluded from international musical life simply because of their nationality."
"Furthermore, we refuse to turn our backs on the rich heritage of Russian culture, including the great works of Russian composers that have so often been created as hymns to freedom, fraternity and values we hold dear."
Switzerland is a nation that has famously maintained military neutrality since the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1815. In late February, however, Reuters reported that Switzerland had broken with its long tradition of neutrality by joining its European Union neighbors in imposing sanctions against Russia, and banning those close to Putin from entering the country.
