Juilliard to Host Spring ChamberFest Featuring Works by Rhiannon Giddens

The festival will comprise of five concerts over three days, from March 13-15, 2023

Grammy Award-winning Juilliard Creative Associate, Rhiannon Giddens, has curated a full slate of chamber music programming featuring Juilliard students, as part of her ongoing multidisciplinary residency.

From March 13-15, 2023, 66 Juilliard students will perform in five public concerts — featuring classic works by Beethoven, Brahms, Elgar, Piazzolla, and Price — as well as today’s voices like Catherine Lamb and Giddens.

Traditionally presented annually, ChamberFest is occurring twice in one academic year for the first time. Participants in ChamberFest select the repertoire of their choice, form their own programs and ensembles, and engage in intensive coaching on the pieces they have chosen to perform in the public concert series.

The Spring ChamberFest ensembles were coached by faculty and guest artists including Audrey Axinn, Rhiannon Giddens, Joseph Lin, David Ludwig, Curtis Macomber, Daniel Phillips, Samuel Rhodes, Curtis Stewart, Aaron Wunsch, and Gregory Zuber.

The program on Monday, March 13 at 7:30pm is curated and hosted by Giddens and will feature three of her compositions — including excerpts from her new opera, Omar. Within the program, students from the historical performance, jazz, and drama departments, in addition to those from the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts, will explore her vocal and instrumental works.

Giddens' residency is part of Juilliard's Creative Associates program, which was created in 2018 by President Damian Woetzel. Each Creative Associate collaborates with the Juilliard community, as well as with their fellow Creative Associates through workshops, performances, coachings, public discussions, and other special projects.
