The Castleton Festival has today announced the very sad passing of its founder and Artistic Director, Maestro Lorin Maazel – aged 84.
Maestro Maazel passed away this morning, at his home in Castleton Farms, Virginia, USA – from complications, following pneumonia.
Lorin Maazel began violin lessons at age five, and conducting lessons at seven – before going on to devote more than 75 years of his life to music-making.
He will be remembered as one of the finest conductors of all time – during his illustrious career serving Principal positions with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Berlin Radio Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic.
Our condolences are with Maestro Maazel’s family, friends and colleagues.
