NEW TO YOUTUBE | VC Young Artist Sophia Bacelar Performs Arvo Pärt's "Fratres"

"I received a grant from Juilliard to produce a short film about artists in isolation during the pandemic, which later resulted in Emergence," Bacelar told The Violin Channel. "I knew I wanted the film to feature myself and a solo dancer, and for the two figures to never meet onscreen- a reference to social distancing and the challenge all of us artists faced when no longer able to collaborate with one another in person."

"The choice of Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres” was based on the minimal nature of the piece," she added. "The work is very minimalist, with the cello and piano almost never playing together in unison. Again, this is evocative of the sense of separation we were all feeling during this period of time."

Soloist and choreographer of the SF Ballet Myles Thatcher created this original piece for the film, and Sasha de Sola brought it to life.

Since their collaboration on Emergence, Sophia has shot several short dance/cello films with Valentina Reneff-Olson that will be released in the coming weeks.
