New York’s Salon de Virtuosi Announces 2023 Career Grant Winners
Five emerging artists have received a $5,000 cash prize alongside the organization’s annual grant, which provides career development and support
Founded in 1989, the Salon De Virtuosi (SDV) provides support, encouragement, and performance opportunities to emerging young classical musicians.
Awarded annually since 1995 to international emerging artists, the SDV’s Career Grants has endowed its artists with over $600,000 in grants. The winners of each year’s edition are awarded with $5,000.
The 2023 Career Grant winners are violinists Daniel Hodos and Keila Wakao, harpist Renée Murphy, the Ivalas Quartet, and VC Young Artist Merz Trio.
In June 2023, Hodos performed in an SDV concert titled “The Musical Soul of Hungary.” Likewise, Wakao and Murphy performed in the “Summer Song for Japan” SDV concert this July.
Comprising violinists Reuben Kebede and Tiani Butts, violist Aimée McAnulty, and cellist Pedro Sánchez, the Ivalas Quartet featured in the SDV’s “East Meets West” concert this month.
All three concerts streamed live here on The Violin Channel.
The five winning artists will also perform live at the SDV 2023 Gala Awards Concert on October 19, 2023, at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Concert Hall.
Previous SDV Career Grant winners have included Gil Shaham, Lang Lang, Philippe Quint, Pablo Sainz Villegas, Conrad Tao, plus VC Artists Josef Spacek, Paul Huang, Zlatomir Fung, Nathan Meltzer, and Yesong Sophie Lee.
Founded by pianist Charlotte White, the SDV was lauded by musicians including Gary Graffman and Yehudi Menuhin. Now celebrating its 26th season, The Salon has discovered and supported numerous young artists through grants and concerts at New York’s top venues, and at the consulates of countries that are represented in New York.
The SDV’s concerts are supported by the Alphadyne Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts alongside Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, plus the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
