Berliner Philharmoniker's 2021 New Year's Eve Concert with Janine Jansen

Released on EuroArts, this live video recording captures the unique atmosphere of the New Year in Berlin

The Berliner Philharmoniker today released a DVD video live recording of their 2021 New Year's Eve concert, which features violinist Janine Jansen as soloist.

Originally, the concert was to feature Kirill Petrenko, the orchestra's Chief Conductor. However, an unexpected illness meant he had to pull out of the concert, and he was ably replaced by the young Israeli conductor Lahav Shani — who was then just 32 years old.

The program focuses on two great musical cities: Paris and Vienna. Beginning in Austria, the concert opened with the overture from Johann Strauss II's opera Die Fledermaus. This was followed by Jansen's interpretation of the Bruch violin concerto, which is a staple of her repertoire. Rounding out the program were two major works closely associated with Paris — Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Ravel's La Valse.
