Robert McDuffie and Elizabeth Pridgen's New Album, "ICONS"
Released on Orange Mountain Records, the album features music by the iconic American composers Philip Glass, John Adams, and John Corigliano
Violinist Robert McDuffie and pianist Elizabeth Pridgen have recently released a new album, titled "ICONS: Philip Glass, John Adams, & John Corigliano. The pair Robert McDuffie and pianist Elizabeth Pridgen have long been champions of contemporary music, and especially of the music of living American composers.
Their new album, titled "ICONS: Philip Glass, John Adams, & John Corigliano," opens with Philip Glass's 2008 Sonata for Violin and Piano. McDuffie has a particular familiarity with Glass's works: he has performed the composer's Violin Concerto No 1 over 100 times around the world, and was the commissioner of Violin Concerto No 2 "The American Four Seasons."
Rounding out the album are John Adams' 1995 work Road Movies, which evokes the open expanse of the Great American Road Trip, and John Corigliano's Sonata for Violin and Piano, written in the mid-1960s for his father, who was then concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.
"My life changed at age 21 when I met Samuel Barber and studied his violin concerto with him," McDuffie told The Violin Channel. "After that unforgettable experience, I realized that I HAD to champion American music, and began my career interpreting music of American composers."
"Over 40 years later, I’ve come full circle with my latest album that celebrates three trailblazing giants who have made profound contributions to the world of music; three icons."
