Performance Today Names Deborah Borda as Classical Woman of the Year

Borda has been honored for her groundbreaking work in leadership roles at the New York Philharmonic, among other pursuits

Performance Today, the classical radio program hosted by Fred Child, has named arts professional Deborah Borda as its Classical Woman of the Year. The award honors an exceptional woman who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music and who provides inspiration for listeners.

Borda has been recognized primarily for her outstanding work at the New York Philharmonic, where she currently serves as Executive Advisor to the President and Board of Directors. Previously, she was the organization's CEO, and during this time she advocated for innovative programming and introduced several new initiatives.

Previously a professional violist, Borda has also held leadership roles at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. She is the driving force behind initiatives including Project 19, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), and the national Take a Stand initiative.

Borda holds honorary doctorates from The Julliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and New England Conservatory, and she is a member of the American Academy Arts and Sciences.

Borda will appear on Performance Today on March 29, to accept her award and to converse with Child about her extensive career and accomplishments.

"I’m thrilled that Deborah Borda is our 2024 Performance Today Classical Woman of the Year," said Fred Child, host and senior editor of Performance Today. "Though much of her career has been behind-the-scenes, some of the most cherished aspects of today’s classical scene wouldn’t be what they are without her guiding spirit, and determination."

"She combines the forward-thinking savvy and intelligent risk-taking of an entrepreneur with the passionate dedication of an artist. It is with great pleasure that we recognize Deborah Borda with this well-deserved award."
