The New Zealand String Quartet Appoints New Second Violin
Australian violinist Peter Clark will step into the role, following the resignation of Monique Lapins
The New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) has announced that Monique Lapins, its second violinist, has resigned. Lapins, who has been a member of the quartet since 2016, will step down in June 2024. She will be replaced by the Australian violinist Peter Clark.
Previously dividing his time between Australia and New York city, Clark has appeared as concertmaster with the New Zealand Opera, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Chamber Opera, Victoria Opera, Darwin Symphony, and Orchestra Wellington. He has also been Guest Principal Second of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Dublin.
Clark is currently carrying out doctoral research on social innovation and cohesion through music — and is generously supported in this endeavor by Judith Neilson AM, and the General Sir John Monash Foundation. He is also completing an MBA in Arts Innovation, with the generous support of the American Australian Association.
"The New Zealand String Quartet has been my musical family for the past eight years, and I reflect on this time with a true sense of pride and gratitude," Lapins said. "I want to thank you sincerely Helene, Gillian and Rolf, for the exciting performances, musical inspiration, friendship, and the truly genuine and heartfelt music-making together. Our many exciting concerts and enthusiastic audience responses have left an indelible mark that I won’t forget."
"While I’m very excited for the next phase of my musical life, I feel a true sense of appreciation to have been a part of the NZSQ and will be cheering on the quartet in their next chapter."
"My appointment to the New Zealand String Quartet is, for me, a dream come true," Clark said. "The world of chamber music is something truly special and unique, and to join such an esteemed and beloved ensemble as the NZSQ is something I truly value and cherish."
"I am thrilled to be part of the New Zealand String Quartet’s exciting next chapter — it is an honor and a privilege."
