Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra Announces First Female Chief Conductor
The Helsinki Philharmonic has today announced Maestra Susanna Mälkki as their new Chief Conductor – the first female in history to be appointed to the position.
Ms Mälkki, who currently serves as Music Director of the Ensemble InterContemporain and Guest Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, will commence her initial 3 year appointment in March 2016 – which will include 8-10 concerts per year and a number of touring and recording engagements.
Ms Mälkki previously served as principal cellist with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra - before making the decision in 1998 to focus on conducting.
Her recent conducing debuts include performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra - and the New York Philharmonic.
Maestra Mälkki will replace Maestro John Storgårds - who has served the position since 2008.
