The Sphinx Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble Goes on Tour
The Sphinx Virtuosi is a professional chamber orchestra of 18 young Black and Latinx classical musicians who are also alumni of the internationally renowned annual Sphinx Competition – which held its 25th edition in January of this year.
The chamber group will be touring seven cities along the East Coast and Midwest of the U.S. with their 2021-22 tour program titled, “Tracing Visions.” Works will include those by VC Young Artist Xavier Foley, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Florence Price, Jessie Montgomery, Andrea Casarrubios, Ricardo Herz, and Alberto Ginastera.
"'Tracing Visions' sets out to challenge and evolve our ‘classical’ canon by illuminating a new pathway for listening, sharing, and artistic expression,” Sphinx Virtuosi wrote on their website. “As we trace visions of the past, we summon Ginastera’s epic work for strings…We seek to tell a more complete story of America through [Foley’s vision] of the Black National Anthem.
“Montgomery’s Banner unleashes the vibrancy of the many voices comprising the fabric of our country,” they continued. “Casarrubios honors the heroes of today who fought to save lives during the pandemic. These are the sounds of our rich history, our conflict, and our celebration. These are the visions of America.”
Starting at Indiana’s Center for Performing Arts, the chamber orchestra will be making multiple stops across the U.S. including Miami Beach and Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Portland, Maine; Boston, Massachusetts; and in St. Paul, Minnesota to conclude the tour.

The Sphinx Virtuosi is part of the Sphinx Organization, a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to the development of young American Black and Latin classical musicians, hosts a competition and conference annually to showcase America’s young talent.
