Violinist and Pedagogue Petru Munteanu has Passed Away
Munteanu was the former artistic director of the international Leopold Mozart Competition
Prof. Petru Munteanu received his professional training in Bucharest from Prof. G. Manoliu, a pupil of Enescu, and participated in masterclasses with J. Jankelevitsch in Moscow and M. Weimann in St. Petersburg.
After a period as a professor at the Bucharest Conservatoire and director of the Special School of Music in Bucharest, he began teaching in 1970 at the conservatoires in Lübeck and in Hamburg. In 1994, began at the then newly founded University of Music and Drama Rostock.
Munteanu served as the artistic director of the international Leopold-Mozart-Competition and the artistic director of the international competition and the masterclasses for strings in Kloster Schöntal.
His students have gone on to become members of renowned German Orchestras such as the Philharmonics Berlin, Hamburg, Bayerische Staatsoper, Wiener Philarmoniker, among others.
He has served as a member of the jury for great competitions such as the Wieniawski, Enescu, Tchaikowsky, Premio Paganini, Premio Lipizer, Königin Elisabeth, and many more.
The German section of European String Teachers Association) appointed him as president from 2000-2004. He was honored for his achievements as an “honorary professor” at the University of Brasov and was awarded the highest medal of the Republic of Lithuania.
