Hungarian violin virtuoso and pedagogue Joseph Joachim was born on this day in 1831.
Dying in 1907, Joachim is remembered as one of the most significant violinists of the 19th Century.
He was the dedicatee of the Bruch, Brahms, Schumann and Dvorak Violin Concertos – and is credited with the revival in popularity of Bach's Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas and Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
His noted students included Leopold Auer, Willy Burmester, Willy Hess, Bronisław Huberman, Franz von Vecsey and Jenő Hubay.
