Legendary Russian-American violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold died on this day in 1995 – aged 85.
A student of Eugene Ysaye, he is remembered as one of the most influential violin teachers of the 20th Century – his famed students including Joshua Bell, Leonidas Kavakos, Miriam Fried, Chin Kim and Jaime Laredo.
Maestro Gingold served as Concertmaster with the Detroit and Cleveland Symphony Orchestras - and held distinguished teaching positions at the Indiana University of Music, Case Western University, Paris Conservatoire and the Meadowmount School of Music.
He gave the world premiere performance of Ysaye’s 3rd Solo Sonata for Solo Violin.
