Ukrainian-born Canadian cellist and educator Vladimir Orloff has passed away - aged 90

Ukrainian-born Canadian cellist and educator Vladimir Orloff has passed away - aged 90.

A graduate of the Bucharest Conservatory, Mr Orloff was a former 1st prize winner at the Bucharest International Cello Competition.

He performed as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1964 until 1971 - before going on to serve as long term teaching position on faculty at the University of Toronto.

"He was a true gentleman of music ... as elegantly beautiful a person as he was a cellist," Winona Zelenka, Assistant Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony who studied with Mr Orloff from 1979 to 1983, has told CBC Music.

Our condolences are with his family, friends, colleagues and students.
