Slovenian-born conductor Maksimilijan Cenčić has passed away following a prolonged illness – aged 68.

A graduate of the Zagreb Music Academy, Mr Cenčić served as a staff conductor with the Vienna State Opera from 1991 until his retirement in 2014.

He had previously served as Assistant Conductor to Václav Neumann at the Czech Philharmonic – and as an opera accompanist and staff conductor with the Croatian National Theater
