Superintendent Alexander Pereira announced in a press conference last week that Daniele Gatti will be the next music director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence.

Zubin Mehta will stay on as music director emeritus. The two will conduct an equal number of productions in the 2021-2022 season.

Previously, Gatti served as music director of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, where Michele Mariotti will take over his position.

He also served as music director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam — where his contract was terminated following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Gatti has also held conducting roles at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Royal Opera House of London, among other institutions.

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino's upcoming season will begin on September 10.
